This research aims at conducting a comparative analysis of genre and its relation with evidentiality in two different genres, scientific articles on linguistics and newspapers in the Persian language. The research methodology is descriptive-analytic, enjoying both qualitative and quantitative approaches, based on Aikhenvald (2004) and analytic statistics (frequency and chi-square test). Data were collected among 24 scientific articles and 4 newspapers randomly, including 5040 sentences from each genre (totally 10080 sentences). Then the type and the number of different evidentials in both genres were categorized and calculated. The results revealed that grammatical evidentiality was not used in either of the genres, but 6 types of evidentiality strategies were used with different distributions. In scientific articles, “perceptual-cognitive verbs” were the most frequent evidential while in newspapers the “strategy of quotation” was the most frequent type. Finally the results of chi-square test indicated that there was a high correlation between the genre and the occurrence of the type and the number of different evidentials in different texts. In other words, their differences were statistically significant (p˂0/0001) and showed that evidentiality is a context-dependent category that is highly sensitive to genre.
