Linguistically, lenition or softening is defined as decrease in the strength of a sound unit. The present paper is an attempt to describe and explicate phonological process of lenition of Old Iranian sound segments upon entering Khalkhal (Dravi) Tati dialect. That is to say, speakers of the Tati dialect, pronounce Old Iranian sounds with a lesser degree of occlusion. The results of scrutiny into the latter dialect reveals such phonological processes as spirantization (stops to fricatives), voicing, and deletion are common phonological processes observed in the sound system of the latter dialect. These processes examined leveraging Optimality Theory principles. The research findings indicate that in the diachronic study of the development process of Tati sounds, optimal forms are the ones in which the linguistic process of lenition has obviously played a crucial role. Hence, markedness constraints are determining factors in deciding the optimal forms.
