“Var” divine ritual was regarded by the ancient Iranians as a symbol of divine judgment. It is also found in many ancient texts and some none-Iranian and sami religions. The most common way of this ritual was through the interference of natural elements such as water, fire, sulfurated water, boiling oil in both hot and cold forms. These elements were considering as example of the tools of the gods. They have been a criterion for recognizing the right from wrong in complex trials where reason wasn't useful. Performing such a difficult ritual has always raised questions for researchers, for example: How was the place of this divine ritual in public opinion? Why should people accept and do such a ritual? How successful has been this ritual to administrate justice? Is “Var” completely outdated today? If not what is left? These ambiguities require a deeper examination of this ritual. The ritual has lost its practical form during the time and today it is remained in oath.
