The main objective of present study is the representation of the effect of verbal politeness and power on the choice of address terms used in speech form of Persian men and women in Tehran from the viewpoint of sociolinguistics. Address terms are a window opened to social and cultural differences in the society and reveal attitude of individuals towards each other. This article is based on the hypothesis that verbal politeness, formality of context, power, and solidarity affect the use of different types of address terms by men and women. Politeness and power are functions of social structure and are subject to beliefs, public opinion and the society's different expectations of men and women. In most societies, women are more sensitive to social status than men, and are more aware of the social characteristics of language varieties. As a result, it can be said that in most cases, women consider more politeness and formality in their speech compared to men in the same age, education, and social groups. In addition, due to lower social security and instability of social status, women consider language as a criterion for determining social status, and in addition to using high-level patterns of speech, they tend to consider less power and solidarity in their speech. The statistical data of this study obtained through questionnaire. The method of research is field study and the method of data analysis is descriptive-analytic.
