Ayādgār-e Zarirān, originally, in Parthian language and perhaps in prose format mixed with poetry, is one of the oldest extant epic-and-religious texts. The text recounts the heroic deeds of the Iranians combating the Hyōns army. The involvement of some of the court officials, alongside with the military authorities in this battle, adds to the significance of the text. The current study was undertaken to explore the etymology of the court and military titles cited in Ayādgār-e Zarirān and, then, presenting a brief description of those titles and the responsibilities attached to them. From the etymological perspective, the examination and analysis of the official titles deemed to be important in their own era and referred to in the ancient texts could enhance our understanding of those titles. Therefore, it can be concluded that the presence of some linguistic features within the names of these titles indicates that these titles may belong to some period older than the Sasanian era. These features could also cast light on differences which exist between some of these apparently similar titles.
