چکیده

رویکردی مقبول و البته نادقیق در معنی‌شناسی گروه­ های اسمی جمع وجود دارد که مبتنی بر مفهوم حاصل­ جمع است. این مفهوم در مقابل مفهوم سنتی مجموعه در منطق مطرح می‌شود. نظر بر این است که ما از ماهیت­ های حاصل‌جمع نیز مانند ماهیت­ های مفرد شناخت پیدا می‌کنیم در حالی که در مورد مجموعه‌ها چنین شناختی ضرورتاً میسر نیست. در الگوی تعبیری فوق از گروه­ های اسمی جمع مستقیماً به ماهیت­های حاصل‌جمع توجه می‌شود. الگوی دیگری نیز وجود دارد که ماهیت­های مفرد را به عنوان جزئی از ماهیت­های حاصل‌جمع مد نظر قرار می‌دهد. هر دوی این الگوها، فقط کلیّتی از عملکرد ارجاعی گروه­های اسمی جمع را نشان می‌دهند، به طوری که تمایزهای خوانشی توزیعی- جمعی و وجودی-جنس‌بودگی را نمی‌نمایانند. در این مقاله، صورت­های منطقی جمله‌های حاوی گروه­های اسمی جمع با در نظر گرفتن خوانش‌های فوق ترسیم می­ شود. گروه­های اسمی جمع دست‌کم بر چهار نوع ماهیت حاصل‌جمع ارجاع می‌دهند. از سوی دیگر، ارجاع به این ماهیت­ها به صورت معنی‌شناختی در خود گروه­های اسمی رمزگذاری نمی‌شود؛ بلکه حاصل تعامل جهان و زبان است.

A Formal Semantics of Plural NPs

There is a widely accepted, through imprecise approach to semantics of plural NP_s, based on the concept of "sums", which is from the traditional notion of "sets" in logic. It is believed that we recognize sums of things as a part of our ontology, while this does not necessarily occur in the case of sets. To account for the meaning of a plural NP, the above- mentioned model of interpretation considers sums of things directly. However, there has been another model which, by contrast, takes singular entities as part of sums. Both models represent just a totality of the referential function of the plural NP_s. They can't make a distinction between distributive and collective readings or between existential and generic readings of plural NP_s. This paper tries to draw the logical forms of the related sentences regarding various readings. We will see that plural NP_s can refer to at least four types of sums. Moreover, reference to these types is not encoded semantically in the NP_s themselves; it is mostly the result of the world- language interaction.
