The Typology of Reciprocal Constructions in Persian

Abstract
Reciprocal structures sometimes take a complex state of meaning, and complexity arises when the verbal valence does not match the semantic roles. This complexity in terms of morphosyntactic structure can make a challenge in terms of understanding the sentence. Therefore, languages use different solutions for encoding mutual positions in the clause structure. Recent studies have shown this diversity from different perspectives, but more work is needed to determine how different morphological and semantic features interact and what implicit connections and correlations exist with other parts of the linguistic system. Theoretical typology highlights the importance of reciprocal structures to our understanding of grammatical structure cross-linguistically. In the Persian language, reciprocal structure has not been studied technically and comprehensively, and instead, the term matching is usually used in this case; Therefore, this research aimed to find out by examining examples from English, Farsi, and several other languages: Do contrastive constructions affect the change in the valence of the verb? And finally, is it possible to reach universality in the reciprocal structure and the so-called "cross-referencing" in the linguistic comparison? In this regard, the current study is a typological framework, using linguistic data and cross-linguistic comparison. It introduces a technical field for the mentioned term based on a typological approach according to Nedjalkov (2007) and Evans (2008).
