Abstract
The absence of proper names in José Saramago’s Blindness (Ensaio sobre a cegueira) constitutes a significant linguistic and literary strategy. Characters are identified solely through descriptive noun phrases based on roles, traits, or relationships. This article presents a morphosyntactic analysis of these character labels in the original Portuguese and their Persian translation by Asadollah Amraie. Drawing on morphosyntactic theory, the study examines how linguistic structures construct identity and reinforce themes of anonymity and universality. Although the Persian translation preserves the novel’s profound effect of namelessness, it does not consistently replicate the original syntactic structures due to differences in grammatical systems. This analysis highlights the complex interplay between syntax, identity, and translation in cross-linguistic literary interpretation, revealing how syntactic choices shape character identities while maintaining the novel’s thematic focus on anonymity and universality.
